This 1940s house looks north towards Ballard and the ship canal. The existing communal spaces were dark and disconnected. We vaulted the living room ceiling and incorporated both artificial lighting and skylights. Taller, energy-efficient operable windows replaced the solitary living room window, expanding the sense of spaciousness. Finally, the doorway between the living and dining rooms was enlarged, joining the two. Outside, a new front porch, with a separate roof, helps define exterior spaces.
